NY Elite: Congratulations on being an ISC finalist. What does it mean for your work to be selected at the International Screenwriting Competition in New York?
Yaroslav Tryniv: I have several awards in screenwriting, and the fact that I was chosen again means that my talents will be recognized. And this means that I have a lot to develop as a screenwriter. I hope that in the future I will have the opportunity to work on a large project that can be seen in cinemas.
NY Elite: Can you tell us about the work that you participated with at ISC? What is the story about?
Yaroslav Tryniv: The story tells us about friendship and what the treacherous betrayal of this friendship looks like because of the greedy gain of money. About what a real ruler looks like, who wants the best for his city and takes care of him and its inhabitants, and what a person looks like who wants to gain power just to sit on the throne of government, but at the same time does not see beyond his nose. The story reveals a subtle mind, cunning and a subtle game played by Macarius and Auxentius.
NY Elite: Can you tell us yourself and your artistic talents?
Yaroslav Tryniv: I am a psychologist by education. My goal is to become a psychoanalyst. To do this, you need to read a lot of books. Whenever I have free time, I read books. I read a lot. This is where I discovered the desire to try to be a writer.
NY Elite: What scripts have you written so far?
Yaroslav Tryniv: I have written two short scripts and two full length scripts. All of them won prizes at various film festivals.
NY Elite: Top 3 favorite projects that you have been involved in?
Yaroslav Tryniv: I have only one project on which I worked in a team. I met a film director from Los Angeles, and we started working on a new full-length script. After a while, our friendship ended and we don’t talk anymore, and the project we started was left lying on the shelf unfinished.
NY Elite: What type of scripts do you want to write in your career?
Yaroslav Tryniv: It would be correct to answer here that it is more pleasant and interesting for me to work in such genres as drama, detective story, fantasy, adventure. And what topic and the number of pages is already a secondary issue.
NY Elite: As a writer, what is the most important aspect of building a character?
Yaroslav Tryniv: In my opinion, it is important for a writer to understand the psychology of human behavior and his motives. Desires and needs, sooner or later, lead to a point of conflict, which is the center in the plot of the story. Any conflict must be resolved to continue the story. Positive or negative character traits improve or exacerbate the resolution of the existing conflict. This is what draws the image of the protagonist and antagonist on the screen.
NY Elite: What projects are you currently working on?
Yaroslav Tryniv: Now I’m working on a short script that tells how a person gets into a conflict with bandits because of someone else’s loan. And in theory, the bank and creditors should win in the conflict and the person should lose, because he naively assumed that he would get away with it.
NY Elite: What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a career in filmmaking/writing?
Yaroslav Tryniv: Believe in yourself.
