JW Richardson, Screenwriter, Director, Producer

NY Elite: Congratulations on being an ISC finalist. What does it mean for your work to be selected at the International Screenwriting Competition in New York?

It is a great honor to be selected in such a prestigious competition. It is amazing that my work has received such acclaim.

NY Elite: Can you tell us about the work that you participated with at ISC? What is the story about?

My short screenplay “Beautiful Sunshine” was an inspiration for many years. It is about a young girl who changes the life of a woman who has lost her joy, but Sunshine comes into her life and Sunshines natural joy changes the woman’s perspective.

NY Elite: Can you tell us yourself and your artistic talents?

I graduated from Palm Beach College in 2019 with a degree in Motion Picture Production. My love of films and television began early in life. The love of film expanded when I appeared as an extra on Better Call Saul and Longmire. In addition to screenwriting, producing, and directing I am a photographer.

NY Elite: What scripts have you written so far?

Beautiful Sunshine is the 2nd script I have written, the first of my own. Project Valentina was a script I co-wrote with 4 other writers, based on characters I developed while attending college. There are 3 others I am currently working on.

NY Elite: Top 3 favorite projects that you have been involved in?

Beautiful Sunshine is one, the overwhelming positive response has been amazing. Project Valentina has been a challenge because it is a feature and was created from the first words and has grown. Then being an extra in the first episode of Better Call Saul was fantastic, Vince Gilligan directed the first episode. That was a thrill.

NY Elite: What type of scripts do you want to write in your career?

I enjoy writing feel good and inspirational films. There needs to be a specific amount of reality for these types of scripts to work.

NY Elite: As a writer, what is the most important aspect of building a character?

I feel that building characters true to reality is important. I think there is a very fine line between strong characters and crossing over to a superhero type. There needs to be emotion tied to the strong characters while showing a character’s inner strength.

NY Elite: What projects are you currently working on?

I am currently working on short films Beautiful Sunshine, Gone Bye Midnight and Project Valentina. My goal is for these to be filmed in 2022. In development I have The Independent Voter and Waking Up In Albuquerque, which is my first web/tv comedy series.

NY Elite: Do you express yourself creatively in any other ways?

I have begun playing the guitar musically and am developing my photography talents.

NY Elite: What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a career in filmmaking/writing?

Filmmaking and screenwriting can be an amazing journey. The secret that I have found is to surround yourself with other creative people. Creativity breeds creativity, yes, the artist is misunderstood in many ways. Always follow your dream and be true to your heart.
