Screenwriter Jaim Buijs on his recent projects

Jaim Buijs, Screenwriter

NY Elite: Congratulations on being an ISC finalist. What does it mean for your work to be selected at the International Screenwriting Competition in New York?

Like a dream come true. I started writing my screenplay five years ago as sort of a hobby. When I finished writing the story I didn’t know what to do with it until someone recommended the ISC. Unfortunately I didn’t win but personally I see this change as the beginning for something new. Because I’m more determined than ever to see this project get real.

NY Elite: Can you tell us about the work that you participated with at ISC? What is the story about?

The story is about a young low-life couple who are struggling to make ends meet. They are  determined to escape their lifestyle and start over after they find out she’s pregnant. Unfortunately the situation turns sour right after the start. So they need to be prepared for the consequences are at short hand.

NY Elite: Can you tell us yourself and your artistic talents?

I’m a movie enthusiast who started writing to express my feelings as it comes to cinema. Everything I write down comes from the heart and is something I would like to see on the big screen.

NY Elite: What scripts have you written so far?

This far I have only written one script. However I’m currently finding inspiration for at least three other screenplays.

NY Elite: Top 3 favorite projects that you have been involved in?

Unfortunately I’m not involved with any other project besides the script I participated with at the ISC.

NY Elite: What type of scripts do you want to write in your career?

As a true fanatic I write my scripts by finding inspiration in sub genres. To name a few: Giallo, Spaghetti western and Samurai.

NY Elite: As a writer, what is the most important aspect of building a character?

Background and development, the story starts somewhere in the life of the character, either young or old. So everything they have been through or about to go through decides where they find themselves at the beginning or the end of their story. As an example: every character you will meet in my screenplay has a backstory, from the main characters to the ones who only has one line of words.

NY Elite: What projects are you currently working on?

As mentioned earlier I’m currently working on at least three other screenplays. You know what… I believe I just decided which one will be next. For not spoiling too much but to give you an idea of the project. Imagine a Heist movie with Whodunnit elements.

NY Elite: Do you express yourself creatively in any other ways?

I only express myself creatively in writing screenplays.

NY Elite: What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a career in filmmaking/writing?

Interesting question because I try to make a career for myself. I guess don’t give up. We have an expression in the Netherlands that goes like this: Waar een wil is, is een weg. Which means: Where there is a will, there is a way.
