Kohei Hasegawa: The Fusion of Art and Physics

NY Elite: Congratulations on being a top winner in Prospect 100 “Digital Transformation x Meta History Gallery Global Design Competition 2022”. Can you tell us about the artwork you participated it and what inspired this piece?

Kohei Hasegawa:

When I watch the news about the Ukraine conflict, my heart aches for their suffering. Especially when I think of Russians. They didn’t do anything wrong but they are supposed to be evil. But one thing is certain, Ukrainian and Russians wish for world peace. First I drew a lot of double-layered “PEACE”. The number of words mean the number of people wishing peace, and double-layered means Ukrainian and Russians. I also drew the chain in the background and it means limitation. Various things are limited in Russia because Putin keeps things secret from them and bridles Russians’ anger. I drew it translucently because I think it is possible for peace to come to us. If the limitation is strong, we can’t find “PEACE” and that’s why I wanted to say that through this picture.

Kohei Hasegawa: ⽇々ウクライナ関連のニュースを⾒て⼼を痛めていました。何もしていな
いロシア⼈が悪者と思われ、毎⽇のように誹謗中傷されています。ただウクライナ⼈もロシア⼈も平和を祈っているのは確かです。そこで⾃分の絵を通じて、様々な⼈にこの問題に向
き合ってほしいと思いこの⼤会に出場しました。初めに、2つ重ねたPEACEを沢⼭描きまし
た。２つ重ねた意味はロシア⼈とウクライナ⼈、沢⼭描いた意味はそれぞれ平和を祈ってい
る⼈々の数の多さを表しています。また、背景に半透明の鎖を描きました。ロシア国内では
様々なものが制限され、プーチンにとって都合の悪いものは国⺠には届きません。もしこの
まま、制限が強くなって(濃くなって)しまったらPEACEは消えてしまいます。このような意
味を込めて作品を作りました。

NY Elite: Tell us a little about yourself and your career beginnings.

Kohei Hasegawa: My name is Kohei Hasegawa. I was born in Yokohama, Japan and lived there for 23 years. My major was physics and I studied astrophysics as a senior but I wanted to work for a design company in the future. So I decided to study art in New York.

NY Elite: 簡単に⾃⼰紹介とキャリアの始まりについて教えてください

Kohei Hasegawa: 私の名前は⻑⾕川航平です。出⾝は横浜で、⽣まれてからずっと住んでい
ました。専攻は物理学で、⼤学４年次では宇宙物理学に関する研究をしていました。将来の
ことを考えた時にデザイン関係の仕事がしたいと思ったため、ニューヨークへ留学すること
を決めました。

NY Elite: Can you share with us three favorite things about your city/culture?

Kohei Hasegawa: The first one is ramen. The second one is onsen. The third one is public order.

The first one is ramen. There are various types of ramen in Japan and there is a famous ramen called iekei-ramen in my home city. I love it and we can eat it in Manhattan! The second one is onsen. Many Japanese people soak and relax in a hot bath at night and we go to onsen because we want to experience a different atmosphere and soak in a hot spring to soothe our bodies and minds. The third one is public order. Our city is very safe. Even if children go back home by themselves, we aren’t surprised because it is normal. That’s why our city is super safe.

NY Elite: あなたの町/⽂化で３つお気に⼊りなものを教えてください

Kohei Hasegawa:

1 ラーメン
2 温泉
3 治安
１番はラーメンですね。⾊々なラーメンがありますが、横浜出⾝というのもあり家系ラーメ
ンが１番好きです。２番⽬は温泉です。ニューヨークに来て３ヶ⽉が経ちましたが、サウナ
で整いたい欲がヤバいです。もちろんこっちではサウナという⽂化があるわけもなく。アメ
リカ⼈の友⼈と温泉について話す機会があり、裸で同じ室内にいることが考えられないと
⾔っていました笑⽂化の違いですね。３番⽬は治安です。来て２ヶ⽉で地下鉄の銃撃事件
があったように常に危険が⾝近にあります。例えば学校には鉄格⼦があったり、児童は親の迎えを待たなくてはいけないなど。そう思うと⽇本は素晴らしい国なのかなと思ったりもし
ます。

NY Elite: How has your experience been in New York? What do you like about NYC and the art culture?

First, It’s hard to get over the language barrier and I was so frustrated because I couldn’t express what I wanted to say. But I came to gradually be able to listen to English. I love the architecture, design and layout of New York. Especially, I like buildings made of rengas and It’s like I’m inside the movie. I also feel freedom in New York. Most people go through the red light even the
police. I like those things.

NY Elite: ニューヨークでどのような事を経験しましたか？/ ニューヨークとアートカル
チャーのどのようなところが好きですか？

Kohei Hasegawa: ⼀番に⾔語の壁を感じました。伝えたいことを伝えることができないこと
が悔しかったです。そもそも何を⾔ってるのかもわからなかったです笑。でも最近は少しず
つ聞き取れるようになってきました。ニューヨークの建物が印象的で好きです。⽇本と違っ
てレンガを使っている建物が多く、街を歩くだけで映画の世界にいるような感覚になりま
す。また、ニューヨークにいると⾃由な⾵潮を感じます。ほとんどの⼈が信号無視をするの
ですが、警察でさえも信号を守らないことが多いです。そういう⾃由な⾏動が好きです笑

NY Elite: Can you tell us about your educational background and what are you currently studying now?

Kohei Hasegawa: I studied physics in university. And now I mainly study English and I’m going to transfer to Art school.

NY Elite:あなたの学歴と現在何を勉強しているか教えてください

Kohei Hasegawa: ⼤学で物理学を学んでいました。現在は語学をメインで勉強しており、
アート系の学校に転校する予定です。

NY Elite: How has the transition from physics into graphic design been for you? What do you enjoy about science and art?

Kohei Hasegawa: When I decided to transfer, I was worried but I noticed I can take things from various viewpoints. And now, I want to make a fusion of physics and design. I think art and physics are connected. When I was experimenting, I felt art about laboratory instruments and graphs. So I enjoy finding art in physics.

NY Elite: 物理学からグラフィックデザインへの移⾏はどう感じますか？科学と芸術の何を
楽しんでいますか？

Kohei Hasegawa: 初めの頃は不安でしたが、いろんな視点から考えることができると気付き
ました。今では物理学とデザインを融合したデザインを作ろうと思っています。また、私は物理と芸術は繋がっていると思います。実験を⾏っていた時に実験器具やグラフなどにアー
トを感じたりしていました。（この器具可愛い〜みたいな）なので物理に限った話ではない
ですが、違う分野からアートを持ってくることを楽しんでいたのかもしれないです

NY Elite: What art do you most identify with?

Kohei Hasegawa: I like things with regularity like this picture. I saw many regular figures while I was studying physics. That may have been the cause.

NY Elite: どのようなアートに共感しますか？
Kohei Hasegawa: 私は規則性のあるものにアートを感じます。写真のような綺麗に並んでる
ものなど。物理を学んでいたからかもしれないです。

NY Elite: What themes do you pursue?

Kohei Hasegawa: The fusion of physics, graphic design and Japanese culture!

NY Elite:どんなテーマを追求していますか？
Kohei Hasegawa: 物理学、グラフィックデザイン、⽇本の⽂化を組み合わせたアートを体現
したいと思っています。

NY Elite: What’s your favorite artwork?
Kohei Hasegawa: I love KAWS’s paintings and stature. I want to work with him someday.

NY Elite:あなたのお気に⼊りの作品を教えてください
Kohei Hasegawa: KAWSの作品が好きです。いつか⼀緒に仕事したいな〜

NY Elite: What does “being creative” mean to you?
Kohei Hasegawa: Sometimes, I see designs that imitate something. I don’t think it is Art. I think being creative means the things nobody can imagine. I think the things nobody can understand is Art and It connects “being creative”.

NY Elite: あなたにとって“being creative”は何を意味しますか？
Kohei Hasegawa: 有名なアーティストのデザインを真似したデザインを⾒ます。私はそれに
アートを感じません。私は誰も想像できないものを作ることがこの⾔葉の意味だと思いま
す、誰も理解できないものがアートであり、それがこの⾔葉に繋がると思います。

NY Elite: What can we expect from you in 2022?
Kohei Hasegawa: My exhibition will be held!!!
